I was wondering if my truck had manual locking hubs it has the lever on the floor. It is a 1997 the light comes on but it doesn't feel different in the snow. If so how do you put switch the hubs?

They are most likely auto hubs. Look at the front hubs and if they do not have a straight piece going across the center with a slot on either side then you have auto. That is, the auto hubs have nothing to grab hold of in order to twist. The hub will be smooth across the face. If manual, simply squat down and look closely. You will turn them one direction or the other and it should be indicated on there. My 97 is auto with the floor lever. If the light comes on I bet they are auto.

Then it is a auto hub. But the 4wd doesn't seem to work. Is there a problem with the vacuum lines that do the engaging? It is a 1997 f250 powerstroke.

well honestly, I've exhausted my knowledge. I do know they are vacuum actuated so you might start checking those but someone else will have to add on to this. Sorry about that.

DO you think I could convert them to manual hubs from like napa or any auto parts store? If not I heard that the vacuum lines crack and don't seal which causes them not to work. I hope thats it the problem. Anybody else have any past expierences with this problem?

I thought , correct me if I am wrong, that the hubs are centrifugal.

yes, I think you are correct. I just did some searching and came across a description that validates this. One of the reasons so many go to manual - no need for movement to engage.

tilyn62, the predominant brand preference from my reading various ford sites is Warn. Im sure there are other good brands but that is where most seem to go.

So your saying the manual hubs are centrifugal and the autos are vacuum assisted?

no, the auto are centrifugal and manual are just that. The manual you twist the hub center and its locked. The auto, when you pull the handle inside you have to get rolling to lock them in. That is what frequently leads to problems if stuck - you rock trying to get out and it breaks one of the auto hubs or it just doesnt ever lock and you dont get the front spinning.

napa sells the warn premium manual hubs then on warn industries site they say you have to buy a spindle conversion kit. Do you think it would be hard to switch it over?
