I have a 2000 PSD with manual transfer case and manual locking hubs. I have an uncle that owns powerstrokes also. He seems to think that if I engage the 4WD (on the transfer case), then the manual locking hubs have a feature that will automatically engage. He said they can also be manually locked, but it's not necessary. Does this sound right to anyone? Or do I have to manually lock the hubs every time I need 4WD?

the factory hubs on the Electronic Shift On the Fly ("ESOF") are vacuum actuated with a manual override.

When they work.

After resealing the knuckles on mine & having them fail again, I threw them in the trash and put on a set of Warns.

Get under the truck and look at the back side of the hub, if you see a 1/4'' tube coming off the top backside of the hub then you have a vacuum operated hub, if there is no tube then you need to manually lock the hubs.

if you have a manual transfer case, then your hubs are going to be manual as well and do not have an automatic lock feature.

I gave mine away and put in Warns, couldn't part w/ the $$$ for ESOF replacement on just 1 wheel.

But..when they work, they are great.

Looking to buy manual hubs

I also have a 1999 SDD with SOTF 4wd. Bad seal on one side, just put in ball joints and axle u-joints. When I need 4wd I need it, I can't just hope the vacuum system is working.

Anyone out there know the part number and the best place to buy Warn manual hubs?

Who else makes hubs and do I need a concersion kit?
I don't think I do as it is part time.

Hubs have locked and auto feature and barely move with broken plastic.

In response to Kirbco, does anyone know roughly the cost of some Warn manual hubs?

Had a shop do it for me: $330 for 2 hubs + $175 installation 1.5 years ago, including repacking all bearings, replacing all seals, etc. IRC it was about $400+ for 1 auto hub replacement cost. Sorry, no part no's in my file.

Replacement Hubs

Check out dynatrac.com, they have a conversion kit that will also get rid of the unserviceable unit bearing. You'll get new spindles, hubs w/ timken bearings, outer axle shafts, manual locking hubs and more. It's pricey, but if you plan on really keeping this truck, it adds peace of mind. I don't work on my truck as much as I used to but I installed the kit in just over half a day. Every thing in the kit was top notch.
