Hey Guys,

I was just about to "push the button" and buy the Mag Hytec tranny pan.......as I was doing a search on this site and others, I'm not so sure anymore. It appears that a better buy might be a bigger transmission cooler. I' m looking at the Tru-Cool 4590 as a bigger upgrade. I frequently tow my 14k 5th wheel, and I'd really like to "go overboard" in keeping my tranny cool. I tow on mountain grades as well as flat. I'm not currently having any overheating issues, and I don't want to start either. I'm in the process of getting a quad-pod and some guages. Might I respectfully request the thoughts of you guys on this transmission cooler upgrade? Since this thing can be had for under $100.00, it may give me much more bang-for-the-buck in terms of keeping the tranny temps down...................

I have to ask...since i dont see that you have after market gauges (listed
in your signature).

do you NEED the added cooling capacity ? have you been over heating
the tranny now (not that you wanna wait til you have).

but so many folks dont realize how STOUT the 5r110 (aka torq-shift) is...
its got a by-pass filter (from the factory)....and its already equip'd, from
the factory, w/ a trans cooler (w/ an inline thermostat).

some warmth is GOOD

Hey Bush,

Looks like you've taught me something new..........AGAIN!:D I had always heard that the blue oval guys "over-manufactured" these trannys in our trucks..........especially the 5R110.;) I had no idea that it had a bypass filtering system from the factory...................now that's a beautiful thing! I currently have no overheating issues that I'm aware of; the factory guages are not at all accurate (so I'm told), but I've heard guys say that their aftermarket guages were reading 210F while the stock guage was still reading normal. I just wanted to be sure that if there were some preventive things that I could do now to prevent any future tranny problems, I'd go ahead and do them. One guy told me that the stock cooler that comes on our trucks is actually bigger than the Tru-cool 4590 as far as surface area goes. Think I'll go ahead and get my guages installed (Autometer Phantom II) and keep up with the scheduled maintenance.:sweet

Many Thanks, My Friend!

Im not saying a HIGHER capacity trans pan wouldnt be a good move...
BUT its gonna take LONGER to warm that fluid and open the thermostat
thats provided w/ the factory cooler & by-pass filtering.

the fluid capacity of the system is about 20 or 22 quarts as it is (stock),
the stock trans pan hold 7 quarts of fluid. (remember ONLY USE
MERCON SP)

Sponsor ITP Diesel has been nice enough to provide VISUAL PROOF that
the factory provided transmission gauge is JUNK --> ITP Diesel, Trans Gauge PROOF

heres PREVENTIVE maint. on how to COMPLETELY flush the transmisson
(including the torque converter)...in your own drive way....ive done mine
this way --> How-To Flush Ford's Torqueshift Transmission

heres service info (location & photos) of the factory provided transmission
by-pass filter --> Transmission By-Pass Filter Replacement
