I just installed my new Mag-Hytec cover, now I have a question. The directions say you will need 6 qts of new gear oil. I put in 5 qts of Royal Purple 75w/140, and the dipstick is showing I'm full already. So for you guys that have installed these covers, how much oil did yours take?

You've got 2 ways to go.

1. Remove the plug on the back center of the Dif cover and fill til Lube oil comes out.

2. Fill from the top plug until the Dip Stick shows Lube Oil on >at least< half of the full range on the stick. (what I did)

Mine took all 6 quarts.

Does the plug on the cover match the factory hole in the front? I was gonna take out the factory plug in front, and let the extra oil run out til its at the right level. For my truck, 6 qts is WAY too much. I took out the plug on the cover, after 4 qts oil was running out already, but it was barely showing on the dipstick. I think Mag-Hytecs directions are wrong.:dunno

You have to remember that the Hytech is Deeper, both horizontally and vertically. The OEM plug is an indicator of sufficient lube level to keep the Ring & Pinion half (ish) submersed in lube with the OEM dif cover on.

>BUT< if 5 quarts shows on the Hytech dip stick, at a level you feel good about ? Your Call :dunno

You might go with 5 quarts and drive it for bit. Then check the level again ? Once the lube gets worked out into the Axel houseings... it might take that last quart.

I put all 6 quarts in per the directions. Drove it, then checked it.. it showed at about 3/4s on the cross hatching on the dip stick. Also remember.. Lube, anywhere on the dip stick reference marks is sufficient.. WHERE on the reference marks is, again.. Your call ?

I agree with you, except the factory fill plug is, like you said, about halfway up the ring and pinion. That said, the ring and pinion hasn't moved, therefore the factory fill plug should be the final say.

I dis-agree. The OEM plug now becomes Moot. Part of the benefit of a larger Dif lube capacity is More lube. Like a larger Trans or Oil Pan.. More Capacity. Couple more capacity, and with the Aluminum's ability to dissipate heat ? That's what the Mag Hytech is all about. Heat dissipation.

Not Only the "Looks", the Rear-End runs a bit cooler, because of the above.

I also filled mine thru the cover fill hole, and the truck is in my garage, so its level. I'm not trying to argue or anything, just don't want to overfill my axle.
