Any body out there having engine or drive-ability problems with low sulfur/ultra low sulfur fuel? If so can any thing be done to make the problems go away? Also are early design engines 7.3L/6.0L, affected any differently, than later designs?

Thanks Dave (elliotthere)

I belive there are lubricity problems with the ULSD and LSD. I cannot pinpoint as having any with my F250 but have had a injection pump implode on my 09 Jetta TDI (under Warranty $9,700). I run an ounce of Walmart TCW3 mix oil per gallon to add some lubricity to the F250.

I have been running my 2004 6.0 diesel on ULSD since it came out here in California and have not had any fuel related problems in over 125,000 miles. I don't think it will be a problem for you.

On some of the older PSD's, the fuel injection/supply systems were designed, to a certain degree, to rely on the Sulfur content, for lubrication, from Strait #2 diesel. They will run fine on the LSC & ULSC, but many of us, with the older diesel engines.. for a longer service life.. run 2 cycle oil, the TCW3 in it.. to regain some of the lost..... lubrication.

This is NOT a requirement, and shouldn't be a factor in your choice, if you find and older PSD that fits your needs.

I would recommend using a Fuel Additive for the Lubrication. I use Power Service
myself and have not had an issue, there are others as well. I add 16oz to a Tank Full of Fuel.

I believe the 6.0 was designed for ULSD. And of course, the 6.4 and 6.7 had to have been, as the 6.4 came out the same year as the fuel switched.

I, like many other 7.3 users, run a quart of two-stroke oil per tank of fuel to restore some of the lost lubricity. We've noticed above all else, a reduction in injector noise.

I run supertech tcw3 2 stroke oil as well. 1oz/gal. I dont know if the previous original owner ran that. I bought the truck with 242k on it and have all the service records and no major probs. I run it every tank full. I get the gallon jug and just fill a quart bottle up. Mainly just lowers the injector cackle a little bit. Every little bit of oil helps in the fuel system. If you get a 7.3 you def shouldnt have any probs. Really great, bullet proof motor. 6.0's had their probs and they are usually major as long as the crap hasnt been ran out of it.
