lossing coolant

i have a 2004 6.0 you can see in my sig with 13000 miles on it about once a week i have to refill the coolant res. oil looks fine i dont think its a head gasket issue ne ideas ? also when i get on it it black smokes like a mo fo is that normal for this low milage

ok so BLACK smoke is typically OVER FUELING (whats your mpg like ?).
coolant loss would typically cause WHITE smoke (steam)...unless
the coolant is leaking on the ground...so your symptoms and a bit
different than i would expect.

so id be checking for any EGR related codes & combustion "gases" (fumes)
in the coolant (could be a sign of a cracked egr cooler or leaking head
gaskets)...

i have to ask...what mods have you done to the engine...

my guess is a head gasket if you are seeing coolant in you oil... you should take it in and see what the dealer finds...

mine does that when i have my chip turned up, but it doesn't smoke, i've blown 5 res. caps dont know

Mines in the shop right now for burping out the degas bottle and loss of coolant, and egr valve. She is sick right now but the dealer suspects head gaskets, mine is a 04 6L too, there is a tsb on the head gaskets and that might be your prob not sure though.

Do you ever get rough idle, turbo cycling up and down under light throttle?? If so could be egr also, black smoke...too much fuel or not burning off enough I would guess but I,m guessing right now on that one mine didnt smoke.

thanks guys im new to diesel engines so im tottaly in the dark with the smoke my spedo is of because of the bigger tires i get like 280 miles to a 29 gal. tank i have no after market stuff engine wise on the radiator support there a sticker from a ford dealer that said that the ecu has been reflashed ive also noticed in the morning when i first start up it kind of runs rough and puffs blue ish smoke but then clears up ive checked my oil and looks fine i had a 96 trans am before this and went through sets of head gaskets so i know what kind of oil mess to look for .thanks for the advise

something else you can do is capture a sample of your oil at
your next oil change...send the oil to blackstonelabs for testing...
itll tell you if you have coolant in your oil or fuel in the oil too...as well as
anything else.

i found a pin hole in my res. tank, am going to put on a new one, this morning when i started my truck, it sounded like it was only running on a few cyl.'s would not move at all, when i put it in gear, it sounded like is was going to die if i let it warm up runs just fine, think it is going to have to go to the shop here soon

Sounds like you have head gasket problems.
