im new to the whole diesel thing. im looking at a 2004 f250 xlt with 45k on the odo. its loaded for the most part without leather and the roof clearance lights(which im wondering if i can install after i buy the truck). it has a 3 guage piller pod, auto, and is an ext. cab. my friend who owns a 02 ctd, says that fords are having problems and thats all ill be looking at when i get one. problems with the tranny and electrical problems. im wondering- what do i have to look forward to when i buy this? how mod-friendly are these trucks? ill only be looking to do a nice exhaust, a chip, and an intake. any problems with that? thanks for your help guys.

04 6.0's had their fair share of issues, but not to many related to the torqueshift tranny or electrical gremlins( well there was one chaffing throttle wire incident:roflmao ) . I would run an oasis report on the VIN , the selling dealer can pull one in a jiffy and you can see all the repairs that ford did against the truck, then make a decison . there were enough recalls and such that it should be good now.

not to many reports of knobs falling off the dash like Dodge, or doors opening going down th road,
axles and u joints undoing them selves.

didnt know all that, the only thing thats wrong with his is turbo lag- but if you knew how much he had done to it you would know why. he needs it tuned. how much am i looking to spend in mods if i wanted to do a 4" exhaust with a 5" tip, nice chip, and an air intake. looking to make about 400 hp. will the tranny hold up?

6.0L, it would cost you about 600 for an exhaust, maybe 400 for a chip (these are ballpark prices so don't put these up against anything) and you don't really need an air filter, unless if you have them just for the reason so that you can clean them and go and not have to change them all the time, then there's no reason to get one (I feel kinda dumb for buying it)

Tranny should hold up, but as stated above, dont put my word against others

If the truck has gauges - maybe you should check that exhaust and make sure it's not already a 4". Not always - but for the most part - a truck with gauges may have already been chipped and exhaust.

Tranny - remember that these trannies learn the way that you drive - don't stick a chip in there and then go hog wild. Start slowly and let the tranny learn the new power level it has.

04 Motors - I have one. Motor is fine. The problems were some wire issues that should have been taken care of with any recalls on that truck. Another is the EGR - somebody had a bright idea to install them on diesels :dunno

Other than that - have an Oasis report run be any Ford dealer and it will tell you any and all repairs done by Ford.

Good luck with it all.

ill have to look at the truck closely next time. is 400 hp going to hurt the tranny? even if i do take it easy? im not looking to break land speed records, just mess around in her, tow alittle, pull off some. i know as soon as i get it my friend is gonna want to pull off and i wont do it. so is 400 hp possible with just a chip and exhaust? possibly intake?

paroxysym, Welcome to SSD. First thing you need to do is put a lock on all Credit Cards, Billfold, and check books around this bunch. They are real good at spending your money for you.:roflmao :roflmao Please post where you live at now or where you are from.:sweet I think 400 HP is close to what you can get with these mods. Someone on here will know for sure.
Again, Welcome and come back ofter.:thumbs
