it wont be necessairly "cheaper" to run a manual, but most like the fact of the stronger components, nearly bulletproof design of the ZF. when you add alot of power to the ZF, all you'll really need is a clutch, and youre good to go. however, the stock automatic transmission (mainly Torque Converter) will quickly show it's faults, and at the same HP as a stock clutch-ed ZF, the auto will slip like a three-legged dog on ice. the automatic is better for city driving, and when modified ($3500+) is then a BULLETPROOF transmission, that is better for racing than a manual, because it shifts faster. manuals are best for towing.
i have an auto and am getting by with it, but i wish i would have gotten the ZF6 in my truck when i bought it. i have some mods to my transmission to help handle the extra, such as Sonnax valve/tri springs, Amsoil Synthetic fluid, and TC lockup switch. also my chip has some custom transmission tunes that makes it shift very rapidly and firm. the TC lockup is great, it is basically an automatically-shifting manual 4 speed transmission when i put the TC lock on from a start. BUT, its the same as shifting without a clutch. jerks the truck like if you don't finesse the pedal.
