Link Backs explained for dummies?

OK what's the deal with Link Backs in layman's terms? I've read the About Link Backs page and saw a Link Back tab with a "1" at the top of a post.

I think, when another site besides SDD.com links to a thread on SDD.com as a reference for info - something at SDD.com recognizes where the link came from and lets us know via email, just as when a new post appears and you get notified.

Most likely it's a way for similar interest sites are networked, creating more traffic for all.

Linkbacks are part of our search engine optimizer plug in. They make our site more searchable when folks do a Yahoo, Google, MSN etc etc search. That way our info should come up higher in those searches.
