In a van down by the river...
Since my 6 y/o CRT is starting to fail by going out of focus (at random intervals (generally between 5-15 minutes) and the only way to "fix" it is turning the monitor off, then on again, I think I'm in the market now for a new display. I like my 19" screen now so I'd like to stick with that size (unless there's a 17" LCD that is somehow better than a 19" in the same price bracket), but I'm not brand-loyal at all. Most of my 'puter time is spent messing around on the internet so I don't absolutely require super-duper gaming/video performance. Are there any brands/features I should focus on or are most of the monitors out there generally comparable. I haven't checked out Cnet.com yet, but I'll be looking at that site this afternoon.

I dont remember what brand my LCD is:sorry. It is a 17" and I do like it a ton. So nice having the flat screen as opposed to the huge space obtrusive CRT. I think it was about 500 dollars two years ago, not sure what they are running now.

Keep in mind, a 19" crt is actually about 17 to 18 inches VIEWABLE.

A 17" LCD is 17" viewable!

So a 17" LCD will ALMOST be as big as a 19" CRT.

It costs more, but the sony X-Brite screens are WAY NICE!!! The black is sooooo deep, it helps with contrast.

I have the 17" version of the following CMV monitor and paid more for it two years ago than this one costs. I love it: CMV 19" LCD Monitor Deal

Here's Newegg's selection of LCD's for $200 or less. I don't buy computer stuff anywhere else and they have the fastest shipping in the business as well as totally stand behind everything they sell.

Newegg

Do it, man....just reclaiming lost desk space is well worth the money.

Today I can get the 17" new locally for $159 versus the $245 I spent over two years ago on a new Dell 17" LCD.

I've found NewEgg.com to have really good prices and customer service is top notch:sweet

I personally like the ViewSonic's.

But what I would suggest is this - find a place like CompUSA, Best Buy, etc that has quite a few on display. Go there and stare at the screens - you will notice a difference - until you find one (or more) that you like. Make a note of the viewing angles, contrast ratio, brightness and response times. Note the price from where you are.

Then surf the net to get the best price (including shipping) on models that are similar to what you liked in the store.

Love the lcd's !!!!
on my second one and love the tv input if'n I want to take a break :)
Everyone has their own preferences, but a word of caution..
IMHO, bigger is not always better :)

Can go TOO big for MY office space...
and for the software work I do....
typically can't multi-task given concentration needs...
so have multi-pages on a big monitor is not necessary...

too big and to me, it feels like I'm on the front row at the movie theatre :)

and prices have plummeted since I bought my first one @ about $700....
