Last week I was laid off my job after over 23 years with the company. I was working for a direct marketing insurance company and had worked my way up from a telemarketing rep (yes one of those people who call you during dinner to sell insurance) up to a project analyst. Supposedly the company is reorganizing and my position was eliminated. We've had several layoffs over the last several years, and I've been lucky enough to survive them until last week. Still not sure if I want to stay in the insurance business (I have been a licensed agent for 23 years) or try something different. I'm working with an outplacement company (provided by my ex-employer) to help with resumes, networking, etc. At least I'm still on the payroll until December 3rd, then getting severance pay after that for a few months, but I'm hoping to get somethiing soon so that I can have some stability to look forward to.

Thanks Joe. Yes I'm thankful for the severance. It's based on the length of time, so mine is more than others. I'm 58 and was eligible to retire and receive the company's pension at 55 with 15 years of service, as well as keeping the medical insurance (with me paying the entire cost), so I'm in that category, but haven't made a decision as to when to tap into that.

My sympathies to you. I have some recent experience with being layed off. My exit two years ago, wasn't quite as cordial as yours. My ex-employer was not nearly as concerned about the people they let go as your former bosses are. If you were to look for a silver lining, your severence package better than what most people get.

I wish I could say something positive about being in your 50's and looking for a job in today's job market. :(

you got a good severance package, though.

Let me ask you this.. What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Then go for it.

Good idea JL, but I don't think I can make money selling cars. I worked for the local Ford dealership in 1986 for awhile but had some good deals go sour and decided to pack it in. In today's world, the car business isn't too good. Speaking of my layoff, I found out yesterday that one lady (who used to be my boss) was also laid off, and she had over 31 years there. It was about the only job she had after college, and I hear she's taking it pretty hard.
