Posting this for a friend, he has a 2001 E-350 van with the 7.3L powerstroke. Stated the truck just recently has really poor power until you really lay into the throttle then it clears up. Truck has 218K miles on it, very little mods except for a chip, I believe it may be a bully dog. Turbo and injectors are stock. Fuel filter was changed in spring.

Any suggestions on what it could be would be appreciated.

If you think it is the turbo, how would one check it since he does not have a boost gauge? If he can get at it, would we simply check the end play in the intake impeller? If you think it is injectors, can a performance shop or a ford dealer do a check on injectors while in the truck to know if they (individual injectos) have gone south?

First thing to do would be to change that fuel filter (from last Spring ?)... before suspecting/inspecting anything else.

jus my .03 :dunno

Fuel filter location on 2001 E-350

Thanks - I agree, that could be the issue.

Since this is not my truck and the owner does not know, does anyone know where the fuel filter is located on a E350 diesel van, 2001? Also, does ford use a lift pump? I have a dodge and the method for replacing the fuel filter is to replace the filter then run the lift pump while the filter cansiter top is loose in order to purge out any air. Is this the same method for a ford?

Thanks

SAS

does this "lack of power" only happen when cold? EBPV could be on default due to EBVS tube being clogged. quick way to check is to un-plug the sensor, and go for a drive. this will not throw any codes.

fuel bowl where the filter is should be on top of the motor. not to sure on a van though. check air filter too.

Thanks for the suggestion - where do I find this sensor to unplug?

its on the turbo pedestal right under the "snail", and its a small plug facing the front of the van. when you unplug that it goes into safety mode (off) and if that fixes it then you know what to do. if not then maybe we can keep thinking of diff stuff with a little more info. But thats a very common 7.3 problem and symptoms. heck mines been unplugged for three years now.

My truck did the same thing. I was at a red ligh, and when I took off it lagged really bad. I pulled off into an autozone parking lot, just in case, turned the truck off. A couple of time it wouldn't start up at all. It finally did about the third try. I went up to the gas station and filled up. Hasn't done it since. I figure maybe it was bad fuel at my best guess. What my truck still does though is shut off while going down the road and then starts back up again. I'm thinking it may be my linkage on my steering colum being off, because sometime when I try to start it up it wont untill I drop it down to neutral then shove it back up into park. Or I think it may be the throttle position sensor....one time I punched it real fast and it went dead on me...or that just could be a safety setting so I dont blow the engine????

WOWwwwww.... yall seem pretty convince. Ok I'll try replacing it. Don't know how long it will be untill I figure out if that was the problem cuz it only does it maybe once a month.
