when we go on long trips, i strap all the kids in their seats with duct tape, and a few pieces over their mouths, so the wife and i cant hear them screaming at each other, or just screaming at all. 
then i put "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in the DVD player, and strap their heads to the head rest, so they cant look away, and tape their eyelids open.
after a few minutes of that, they are in complete mental & physical shock, and can do nothing but just sit down and be quiet.
hey, i can only take listening to Bambi so many times in the DVD player for 600 miles on the way to Orlando.
