how about the turbo whine? on my '99 it's deafening under load. did they fix that by '03?

unfortunately yes:sly It even has an open element filter but on one of the sites I was reading I think it was in 02 they upgraded the sound proofing;tu

Yeah, when I drive my friend's 02 you have to get on it to hear the whistle, but oh is it sweet :sly

I really like the whistle on my uncle's 94 IDI though, i'm not going to lie.

if you do any towing you're better off, trust me. it does sound cool during accelleration but running 70 in OD pulling my loaded trailer or my 30' TT, hoo nelly it makes your ears ring after a while.

the early '99 like i have is the worst for this from what i understand. improvements were made as the SD evolved.

how do you like the auto trans? do you have any mods (chip or programmer) on your truck?

Yeah my father in-law has an 02 and tows all the time and you can't notice the turbo whine. The auto is ok I would still rather have the manual but didn't want to wait for ever to find one. It has a K&N tube and open element filter which I'm gonna see how it does for a bit then swap in the 6637 paper filter and see if theres any difference. No programmers yet januarys a tough month around here works slow got to pay estimated taxes and all our tags are due personal and buisness plus gotta pay for christmas yet LOL

nice lookin truck. those are the wheels i want on my SD

i have not figured out anything about my fuel mileage. i find that if i drive so that the rpm stays below 2000 and i never hear the turbo, i can get 13 or 14 mpg out of it.

but i use the truck to tow my enclosed trailer a lot so i can never drive that way while towing so i have gotten used to the 10-11 mpg, mixed driving. i took the trailer to Chicago this past summer and got 10 mpg towing 70 mph in OD on the turnpike. i rarely make it thru a tank of fuel without towing but when i do i get 12 or so.

it sucks but for the cost of throwing parts at it i may as well just buy the fuel since it runs OK.

if i kept trying to fix the mpg problem i'd end up getting rid of the truck, gassers are looking a lot better these days. but i have spent a lot of money on vehicles trying to save money on fuel and it hasn't done me any good so i'll stick with what i have for now. if you have any ideas what i could do about the bad mpg i'm all ears

it's all stock except for a DIY intake and a 4" Stainless MBRP exhaust. this pic's kinda old but it still looks the same. 175*** miles

I guess some are cursed with low MPG I have a buddy with an X 4x4 and his little info pod states 21-22 which I know most are wrong but even if it is off 2-3 thats pretty good but it has some kind of program in it so maybe that is helping I dunno. You know anyone up there with a programmer that could let you try it out for a week or so? She still looks good for 175k ours just turned over 88k

Our first tank stated 12.5 on the info pod but we got 13.9 when we filled up so I got to lookin and the tires were at 52psi so I aired them up to 65 now the little lie O meter is reading 15 so I'm hoping its still off by the 1.4 or so and we are closer to 16.5 where our IDI ran. Then if I figured right with the 285 tire I need to add almost 4 miles for every 100which I figured would be almost another .5mpg and if I can get 17 in the winter I will be really happy. I think next I'm gonna throw a programmer on it and see what we get then if it improves that may speed up the purchase of a programmer for it. My 96 has never gotten better the 13 most of the time I get 12 but it also weighs 8500lbs empty with 4.10 gears and the rolling resistance of 6 wheels

Nick has offered me use of a programmer but i have resisted because i am afraid i'll fry my tranny. the 7.3 makes enough power for me stock (remember my other truck is an NA 6.9) but i know if i put a programmer on it i'll catch the bug and then start breaking stuff.

right now i'm in get-out-of -debt zone so i'm treading water when it comes to the new toys.
