take copious notes (or doodle)

take long pauses before answering any question

Is it Grand or petti jury? You can claim your a drunkard or gambler, I believe those are two of the ways out when they voir dire the jury pool. Trying to be struck for cause is playing a risky gamble. One side wants you to think he guilty while the other side wants the opposite. If the side you play runs out of strikes then the other side will pick you. If your school is in a county other than the one you live in then i believe that is an automatic claim of dismissal. I would go and run the scenario you just explained your hardship about and it may work depending on how big the poole is and the type of cases on the docket.

Ive been an expert witness more times than I can count and have always been excused due to the fact the judges all know me by my first name.

most often you'll show up for one day and that'll be the end it sucks but that's the way it goes.

my fiancee was called for JD and they simply told her to call a phone number each evening or morning to determine if she needed to report in for JD. She never had to show up at the courthouse. This was Fed JD.

What if you were called to be a witness, to be deposed or testify in a case. Hypothetically speaking, say in one about a deadbeat boyfriend and a little baby, and a sweetheart of a mother who had issues with said deadbeat jerk.

See if your instructors will call and talk to the judge about it. I did that once.
or tell the judge you can not sit long with out falling to sleep. That always works.

I understand the "civic duty" thing. I've heard that before.

But compelling a person to perform jury duty should not cause severe hardship. In my case, the possible hardships that may result are substantial. I have been out of work for two years now and in school to train for a new profession for over a year now. I'm doing the right thing and am on track to get myself out of a bad situation.

A trial which keeps me out of school for a lengthy period may cause me to fail classes. The cutoff date for refunds of tuition is past. The classes are only held once a year. So I would be delayed at least a year in completing my training, getting my license and getting a job as an A & P mechanic. Then add how much I could have earned that lost year as an A & P mechanic.

The financial pressures and mental stress of how this jury duty could derail my training should automatically excuse me.

There is no selfishness involved. My reasons are concerned with trying to get out of a bad situation and back into the workforce, with earning an income in a decent occupation and how my efforts are being torpedoed.
