If the glow plugs aren't very good could they keep it from doing anything (like even turning over as mine is doing) as some sort of safety shut off?

That a big negative. Even if they weren't installed, the engine would still crank. In fact by pulling the glow plugs and cranking the engine over is one way of clearing oil out of the cylinders after changing the injectors. Not a very neat and tidy way, but "A WAY" none the less.

It's possible, if your glow plugs are bad, it has taken a toll on your starter. That's what happened to mine. Once the cold weather arrived, it meant the starter was working "overtime". It finally went. I had to replace my starter, and my glow plugs. It's been starting just fine, since. :2c

Thanks EVERYONE I have had my VOM out this morning checking everything and putting the wife in to try to crank. I don't know if it finally got warm enough? or what but while under the truck (at the starter) she finally cranked and scared the CRAPPY outs of me. Maybe it just warmed up enough for something to make contact (about 44) 33 in the shade where it was parked. I will check the glow plug connections in the morning if it doesn't start. I checked the solenoid just behind the fuel filter and when the switch came on it passed voltage, thinking it was to the glow plugs?
