I have a whirling noise that comes and goes.

Today I checked and found the following......

1) Found the belt is cracked

2) When I spin the alternator it is making a noise. There is no up or down play at all in the front or back bearing and no lateral play. It still charges so Autozone won't warranty it yet.

3) One of the smooth idler pulleys will not spin freely and has a minor amount of play.

4) The other smooth pulley spins freely but makes a little noise and has a little play.

5) The grooved idler pulley spins freely and has no play.

6) A/C clutch pulley spins freely but is making a little noise.

Since it is intermittent and I can't positively ID the source I guess I will change both smooth idlers and the belt. Sure wish they would go ahead and warranty the alternator as it is likely on its way out.

Lance, I'm with Big Joe.
change the two smooth pulleys first.
They may not be "the" problem
but they are "A" problem

I got AZ to warranty the alternator today.......this is number 3 or 4 from them. It was making a !@#$ of a racket. Cheap Mexico crap but at least they are free and easy to change.

Speaking of a racket........my T/C is making an AMAZING amount of noise. lol

In park if I throw the T/C lock up switch the audible noise drops at least 10db.

Lance, I will second the T/C diagnosis. .. I think you need to upgrade it to one that is at least good for 1400.0105 ft-lbs of torque, and you should mod T\C lockup switch so that it locks up with the EBPV overide...
