That's the problem with mods like that, you may not have noticed any change, but that doesn't mean there wasn't one. Perhaps the filter was damaged internally reducing filter effectiveness, but allowing more flow- who knows? without an objective test there is no way to know. And I agree, the filter is very hard to get out, so who wants to mess with it one icy cold highway drive when it sucks up some freezing precipitation in the dark. Not to belabor the point, but it just seems to me that if there was no downside to a zoodad type air intake - Ford would have done it themselves from the factory.
