I got a set of gauges for my 2000 super duty, from all the research they say the place the probe before the turbo and some say place it on the down pipe. My question is witch is the best?

First off, Welcome. :)

Second, for your first post, you had to open a can of worms huh??? :D

This is a question where you will not get a definitive answer, some prefer one way, others another, kinda like Rhino Liner versus Line-X.

That being said, I prefer "Pre-Turbo" (in exhaust manifold), that's where both of mine are. The issue with "Post-Turbo", (downpipe), is you really have no idea just how hot the exhaust really is that is entering the Turbo. You can assume or interpolate, but you really have no idea. And that's where you could get in trouble if you tow alot. (JMHO).

I'm sure more will pipe in, but that's my opinion.

Again,

Welcome to the site.

welcome...and let me offer that ive run the probe in both locations...
that said...put it in the manifold PRE TURBO...its the only way youll
be able to ACCURATELY compare/share numbers when/if you ever
have any problems.

the egt is a performance and diagnostic device...PRE TURBO is the
RIGHT way to go.

Pre-turbo. Your pistons will be hurt by heat before the turbo. Pre-turbo will tell you what the temps are coming out of the cylinder heads.

Melting point of aluminum is 1225.6 degrees F if I remember correctly. Your pistons have cooling jets that spray oil on the skirts and they can handle a little hotter temps than 1225F. Sustained temps towing of 1250F is the limit, higher than that is rolling the dice IMO. Short bursts over are ok but not for more than a few seconds.

Welcome to SDD! :sweet Visit often.

First off, Welcome to SSD.com and please tell us what you are driving and tell us where you are from. Now for your question go with Pre-Turbo.

If you go in the down pipe temp reading could be up to 500* cooler than the actual manifold, which makes for a not very accurate reading, so go to the manifold
