I recently picked up an '04 F-350 with the FX4 package and it has the 6.0. It had about 180k when I picked it up, but I got a stupid good deal and that King Ranch leather had me from the first time my butt touched it. I really only was gonna get a 3/4 ton, goshdarnit.

On my first long-distance trip hauling something, I had some issues. I was pulling my horse trailer with two horses, about 4500 lb. I'd spent a long weekend about 100 miles away riding with my best friend and my worked called and begged me to get back early, so of course I hurried back. So, I was blazing down the turnpike at 75 mph. I got home (only about 3 miles of surface streets off the highway) and immediately turned off the truck (oops, probably? But I was in a hurry.) unloaded my horses/dropped off the trailer, and started back up to head into work. It was about 90 degrees, if that matters.

I'm about a mile down the road, the truck sounds funny, the temperature gauge is pretty hot, and there's another light that says "check gauges." So, I'm working on getting off the road, and the temperature gauge goes all the way past the top of the red, so I just pulled off on the side and shut it down. The coolant reservoir was completely dry. Has no history of losing fluids since I've had it prior to this incident. I got it refilled and it's been fine ever since. Checked everything before I left on my riding trip and it was fine.

So, please explain to me like I'm 5 what probably happened.

I don't want to say this, but; you have probably blown a head gasket. These engines are known to blow head gaskets and you were running it hard when it over heated. You can get someone to check the coolant for combustion gases after you have run it pretty good. If they detect combustion gases; head gaskets will be needed. I would STRONGLY recommend head studs if you do the gaskets. This is a good cure for blown HGs.

ScangaugeII for $150 or so. Then read the actual coolant and oil temps that your trucks computer is seeing.
