Something tells me you have NO experience in surface mount soldering/desoldering or much of any kind of soldering for that matter.

I was keeping things simple. Yes, in fact the IDM *IS* mostly SMCs, and yes they are a pain to solder/desolder, but when you have the tools, the skill, and the patience, its not hard at all. I guess all those year of highschool and college electronics were a waste tho, and maybe I should have gone into a different line of work than engineering for a radio station.

Is the IDM mod worth 300 bucks? No. Is it something that can be at home? Most likely yes if the details are posted with good instruction so that the home DIY guy can understand what he's doing. And yes, a good warning that if you dont have the right soldering iron (or hot air soldering gun, those are very cool) then maybe they should find someone in their area that is good with those tools.

Tell ya what, after you try modding yours, and ruin your IDM trying, let us know how expensive it is after that.

My money's on Daryl (Ford_Forgotten). I know a little bit about his qualifications and his accomplishments (truck related)

Please don't talk down to people you do not know, or have any idea of their background/qualifications. Believe me. It will not earn you any respect here.

My $.02, :dunno

Easy on the new guy, he only has 3 posts. Maybe he has never heard of Ford Forgotten? This mod cannot be too difficult. I know those that do it say that it requires an o-scope or some means of reading the signals to ensure that the voltage is correct but, once that was done the first time and the "magic" was found, it should just be a do this and that sort of thing.

Scott,

I (respectfully) disagree with you.

If I am new to a forum I do not immediately start posting in such a manner as to be insulting to someone else. Especially when I have no idea what the other person might or might not know about the topic. I think it would kinda make me look like a jerk. :dunno

Now, once I am established I will become a blithering idiot.

I will add $.02 to that and make it $.04 :sweet I have seen the inside of an IDM and I guarantee you I will not attempt to solder anything in it but Daryl can solder mine anytime.

No, I don't know him, but I do know a thing or two about SMT soldering and what it take to do the job right.
So, I'll bow out of this discussion.
