ive always thought that a diesel can idle 24-7 with no problems.ive heard they would be fine if they were never shut off.some people have been telling me that extended idling is bad.so every stop that i make i should shut her down, cause i always make frequent stops and i just leave it running.i figure it will save starter, battery,gp's and gpr life as well as other parts.am i wrong,is there any truth to this?

Wet stacking is a result of incomplete burning of the fuel while idling. This is what you are hearing about extended idling. Incomplete combustion is another result and with all of this "Save the Planet" talk it is not a good idea to idle for long periods.

Wet stacking is not really a problem with EFI engines. If it were an older mechanicaly injected engine extended idle would not be good.

I would worry about the theives.

:dunno I've let mine idle while I drop off/Pick up stuff. Or, to let the Turbo spool & cool down during fuel stops. No problems in 125K, or almost 8 years.:dunno

So.. I'm guna go ahead and say: 3 to 5 minutes for a, Warm up, Cool down or Stop'n Go, won't hurt anything, But JMO.

And.. with ULSC Diesel and the improvements in Lube oil qualities (?) those Wet Stacking & Coking issues, aren't what they use to be (?) again.. JMO

Thievery ? I lock the doors with my remote.(re-wired so I can do that, with the engine running)

Joe

On Edit: I know I'm a 2K guy, but I feel this topic is relevant to All of us Diesel folks ?
