I will be traveling tonight and sleeping in my truck. I will have to idle the truck for about 5-6 hours at 1200 rpm. This puts me at around 325 degrees, is this hot enough? How hot does the engine need to be to prevent fuel in the oil?

Thanks
Scott

i once slept in my truck for 4 hours with it at normal idle (this was before i had the AIC, and before i knew a whole lot bout my truck)

i dont remember seeing any ill effects after that. it was very cold too.

Im confused... what puts you at 325 Degrees? Are you saying your coolant is at 325Degrees F? It would all be steam by then.

Aside from that ridiculous temperature, you should be fine at 1200rpm and normal operating temp. Mine is on high idle 12-14 hours a day every day.
See my Hours question thread and then see my blackstone oil results after 84 hours of high idle PLUS 3000 miles.

Personally, I think people blow this whole "OMG! It's bad to let your powerstroke idle!" thing out of proportion.

Mine's Pre Turbo, driver's side, right before the manifold goes up to the turbo.

Right now it's showing 330F

Most I've seen in a LONG time is a little over 1100.

Ambient temp is in the low 10's though.

Thanks for the replies guys, I didn't get a chance to reply before I left but my wife kept me informed. Anyway, all went well and I didn't have to idle at all thanks to the wife and her insisting on taking extra blankets. As for the questions, the 325 is the EGT which is pre-turbo. I idle at a little above 1200rpm and my EGT hovers between 300-325. Thanks guys!

glad the trip went well scott. i hate it that you had to sleep in the truck tho.

i had to once, the worst part was that my 6yo son was with me, just really felt unsafe sleeping in the parking lot of a hotel, cause there was no rooms available.

were you in an area where you couldnt get a room?

No, I got to the location at around 2am and I unloaded at 7am. I hate paying for a room and only use it for 4-5 hours. I am also inside a locked gate and I have other protection so I feel pretty safe.
