I've had great results using Permatex Right Stuff. Stickier and tougher than any other sealant I've used. Actual recommended sealant from international is a special low silicon grey RTV. Made by wacker if memory serves.

OK, that sounds better. the old oil pan had grey stuff on it. i'll definitely look that up. thank you very much.

the ford parts dept. is getting worse. i needed to explain to them that "liquid gasket" was a silicone after searching for a part number for about 7 minutes. they have obviously been no help.

This is what I've been told for PN's

RTV Silicone Sealer (special sealant for powerstroke)
(Ford) F5TZ-19G204-AB (5oz, 1/2 caulk tube)
(Wacker) T-442
(Internatioal) 1830858C1

thanks joat,

after reviewing the manual again, i'm thinking of 1 mistake that i've done both times. directions say to place a bead and i have been smearing the stuff. i wonder if that would really make a difference. also, i noticed the last time where it was leaking was the rear passenger side. it looked as if the oil pan was the slightest bit bent down and now i'm going to try to give it a little bend upward in hopes that it will all work together in giving a tighter bond around and under the rear main seal and especially to that rear leaky corner.

look at the bright side, i now am able to remove the engine in a record-breaking time of 49 minutes including oil pan removal. (transmission previously out of course)

Speed is important. You usually only have a few minutes before RTV and Elastomeric sealant skins, then it won't bond properly. Lay down a good bead and put the parts together quickly. You probably know this, but make sure before sealing the surfaces are squeeky clean. Any oil or glycol film will prevent sealants from bonding. Carb cleaner or other residue free solvents like laquer thinner and rubbing with a clean rag repeatedly does a good job prepping.

Thats pretty quick for that engine! I got my boat engine down to under a half hour including the I/O drive, after a series of follies had me pull it 4 times:doh:

Does anyone know if it is okay to start the engine without the transmission installed? I will have both fly wheels and clutch assembly installed.
Thanks- Joe

ok fellas,

as it turns out, i used "PERMATEX 2B" form a gasket stuff. i put it on friday the 13th and let the motor sit for a few days before even getting started on the re-installation. thursday the 19th, i got it back together enough to start the motor and let it run for a little bit(15 minutes or so). seems to me that there aren't any leaks. i think that the job is completed.

i want to thank all of the guys that helped me with lots of advice and/or experiences that you guys had in the past.

again, thank you very much fellas.
