How often should you test your SCA?

I have a 99.5 with the green coolant. I was wondering how often you should test the SCA level? I last checked it in February.

Pardon my ignorance, but what *is* an SCA?

"Supplimental Coolant Additive". It is added to the coolant to keep/get the ph within spec. It is tested with strips that change color to indicate the ph level.

I checked it and then added some of the additive but now it tests at 3.4 is this too high? Is there anything I can do to bring the levels back down to below 3.0?

Give it some time to work its way around.... few days of normal driving should do the trick.

you can have too much SCA in your coolant. iirc, the SCA will precipitate back out (ie: undilute, like too much sugar in your coffee) and can clog cooling passages and lead to premature water pump seal failures.

its better to be slightly low on the the SCA range of the test strip than to be too high.

drive it around a little bit and make sure its WARM when you check it. if its still too high, drain some coolant out and save it. replace with fresh 50/50 mix.

if you have a coolant filter setup, you can get filters with SCA tablets that release over time to maintain proper SCA levels.

Thanks Dave. My ignorance is always amazing, and I like to learn when I can. You know, I started thinking about my prostate there first, then remembered it was a PSA. So this is definitely better.

My green coolant is looking sort of dim colored, and I added a pint of that expensive MoJo from the dealer 2 weeks ago. It got brighter...but I'd like to check the pH so I can use "SCA" in a sentence! Where do you get these strips, any parts store?

You should be able to get the strips at most BIG autoparts stores. They come in small packages and they do go bad after time. I think Autozone can get them.
