How much oil?

I am having my head gaskets replaced (see my avatar photo) and my mechanic also worked on the HPOP. I gave him 15 quarts of oil (14 for when I normally change the oil plus 1 because he drained the HPOP) and after he added the oil back in, the reading on the dipstick was low.

Is 15 quarts the right amount to add back in after completely draining all the oil in the oil pan and HPOP? The owners manual and everything I've read on here says 15 quarts is the max.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have not done any HPOP work and have always drained and refiled with 15 quarts including filter, which drains to the pan when you open the cap. I don't know if there is a resivior on the 6.0 like on the 7.3. I have not heard it talked about. I would say start with 15.... start it up to let the system charge, shut it down and wait 20-30 minutes to let everything drain back and go from there.......

Add enough to read just below the mid point and do your oil changes as you did in the past. The reservior for the 6.0 HPOP holds 1 qt of oil.

FYI - Your entire "dry fill" quantity is 18 quarts.

18 qts is not documented any were - but it is what the engine takes - period. The oil pan takes 14 qts to fill. The filter takes 1 to 1 1/2 qt to fill. The high pressure oil pump reservoir takes 1 to 2 qts to fill. The oil cooler takes about a 1/2 qt and the branch tubes and oil rails take about 1 qt.
My guess to the differences in oil capacity would be they changed the pump design and the oil rail design along with the stand pipes, so capacity amounts can differ between model years.

Just go by the dipstick and you will be fine.

With a 1.2 qt bypass filter, I always use a full 4 gallons. 16 qts. That always puts the level at the top of the hash marks for me. So without the bypass, 14.8ish.

What is price tag for this repair???

My mechanic told me the Ford dealership charges somewhere about $5K for new head gaskets. The head gasket kit runs about $1K, and they charge you somewhere between 30 and 40 hours of shop labor.

He did mine on as a side job, so it was considerably less. :innocent

WOW... I just talked to two my friends, who just got head gaskets replaced [at Ford] and was told it would cost $2200. (out here in San Diego).

I know that they have to raise the body of the truck to conduct the repairs but wow that is costly.

Thanks for the info.

Ford's allowable time for a 6.0 head gasket job is 14 hours. I had mine done 2 years ago.

And a head gasket kit is between 300 to 400 bucks. Now I know labor rates have gone up and parts too, but someone fed you a bunch of bull on those prices.
