Just curious, i checked today after about 5k on this oil change, i'm going to change oil at 6k intervals. I was about 2 qts low. is this ok? i now have almost 109k on the engine, bought it with 104. my dipstick isn't the one with the numbers that match the one that read low.

I would say that your consumption is average. I tried longer change intervals as well and its wasnt uncommon for me to use two quarts when I get to the 6000 mile range. I also noticed my rig starts running crappy at over 6000 miles on the same oil. So rather than dump in the extra fresh oil just to squeeze out another thousand miles I have tried to keep my intervals under 6K. Your results may vary. :D

My truck doesn't seem to use any oil between 5k oil changes. Never has. The only time it did was when the injector o-rings catastophically failed and I used 8 quarts in 150 miles (at which point the truck quit running)! That was right after an oil change at 175k miles. Cheers!

One to two quarts every 5000 miles is nothing to worry about. Mine usually goes through a quart about every 3000 miles.

About 1 quart low after 5000 miles.

This truck is sitting at 250K miles! ;)

Any number of things can contribute to oil consumption.

  • injector o-rings
  • piston rings
  • turbo seals
  • leaks
  • incorrect dip stick

There are probably more, I listed the easy ones.

I'm just wondering why some would burn or loose oil while others don't. It seems like it's normal to use a quart or two between changes? Interesting...
