Kind of sounds like "How much anti-freeze does it take to winterize your RV's water sytem?"

Answer: Normally 2 to 3 gallons of the pink stuff. It can take 6, 7 or even more gallons if you forget to by-pass your water heater and the drain plug is out of it. Not that I'd know anything about that.:innocent:innocent:doh::doh:

ok ill play.....

it was 8 am, i share a bay with another tech. he was doing a service on a cat c15. he had drained the 50qts into an already full catch basin, left the plug out and pumped a fres 50 in, checked the dipstick and excaimed "i just put 50 qts in an its not even on the stick!". at this point i poke my head around the hood i was working behind to see oil from wall to wall, and spreading quick. it took us until noon to clean up the 100 qts.

next......we have a hot shot know it all fresh meat mechanic at work. his first job was to swing a detroit 60. he layed the fuel lines on top of a crossmember, and the coffee truck came. when we emerged from the break room, we found that his fuel lines had fallen down (because they werent tied up) and had drained 2 almost full 150 gallon tanks. that took 4 guys about 5 hours to fully clean up.

spills happen....just have to be able to laugh at yourself when its all cleaned up. KEEP THAT STUFF OUT OF THE DRAIN! a teaspoon of oil will spread and contaminate water in a HUGE radius.

two things..
1. Does Detroit still use the "build-a-gasket" head gasket?

2. Shop where I used to work, storm drain on the street emptied into a little creek that runs dry half the summer.. anyway, the City is inspecting it, and lo, there's a sheen on the mud. Oohh it's GOTTA be that Goodyear store polluting.. Dept Environmental Quality, HAZ-MAT company, company representatives, City engineer all have to come down, look at disposal record, waste oil transport records, drill wells in the parking lot & test the groundwater, bust up the parking lot and inspect the sewer lines, bust up the shop floor and replace the oil-water separator..

so one day, I notice one of the Haz-Mat trucks sitting out in the lot with the engine running, and oil is POURING out of the rear main seal, and a hydraulic line is leaking...

think anyone cared about that?

does it take to sop up the oil that runs out of your engine when you realize that you did not close the Fumoto valve correctly?

The correct answer is 3 bags.

The red truck is now know as the Exxon Valdez.

my only excuse is that it was dark and I was tired and hungry and in a hurry. it happens to best of us, and not so best of us.

dp
dp,

I dont think this is what we have in mind when we talk about an engine flush procedure. ;)

That's along the same lines as cops speeding, turning with out signaling, and all the other good stuff that some of the cops I've seen around here do, that they would pull any "normal" person over for in a heartbeat. Not to bust on cops, but you get the idea. Did you tell the guy about it?

How much oil did you get in before you realized your error?

I ask because years ago I forgot to put the plug in my old 42' GPW but by the time I got one quart dumped in I was standing in a lake. I imagine 14 quarts would make a BIG lake

crumm-

i got all 14 quarts in and walked from the hood to the 'bench' behind me to put the empties back in the box to save them for the next oil change day.

when i turned around, i noticed the puddle seeping under the truck. i realized what was going on and i dove on the creeper to shut off the valve.

i did not close the valve. i left it open and secured the hose clamp ring to the extended nipple. so when i looked to see if i had closed it, i looked for the keeper ring to see if it was in its place. since i saw it's tails i figured it was good.

My answer is 40 pounds (2 big bags of Always Save). I was changing the oil in my garage, and dropped the drain plug. It hit the 5 gallon catch pan, bounced, completed 2 perfect flips, and lodged right in the hole in the catch pan. The oil was hot, and I couldn't get it out without burning my hands, so I watched in horror as oil poured everywhere. Of course, I have no kitty litter on hand (I've since rectified that), so I have to ride my motorcycle to the store to get some. Riding through town on a GSX-R600 with 40# of kitty litter tied to the tail earned me some stares. Now I have the Fumoto, so hopefully I can avoid the whole dropping the drain plug ordeal.

My only experiance, thankfully, was a time when

and it pucked out several quarts of oil.

I didnt need any kitty litter cause i was on a GRAVEL driveway
