I have a 99 F-250, with the 7.3 liter diesel that has an Edge Evolution programmer(set on 2nd level), stacked with an Edge EZ power module,4 inch MBRP exhuast, and a K&N air intake and am wondering if anyone knows, roughly, what kind of horsepower I am getting. I also have been getting some pretty weird turbo noises during late end acceleration and was wondering if a new turbine would fix my problem?

Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

just a guess...300 at the rear wheels :dunno

describe the noise you are hearing...is it like a flutter?

also....you have a pyro with those stacked power adders i hope, because stacked chips and programmers can get really hot really quick.

Do you have an early 99 or 99.5?

Would you describe the late acceleration sound as a rattle?

That was the first indications my first/factory turbo gave that it was going downhill. New turbo, no more noise.

Its a 99.5 and yes I have a pyro. As far as the shutter I would say its more of a flutter than a rattle, and it really only started about a year ago after i put on the new air intake.

i would say you are experiencing turbo surge or commonly called "turbo fart." i dont have an exact definition, but it basically means the turbo cannot pull in the amount of air that you are demanding it to...someone else will chime in with a more complete and understandable definition

turbo surge can be fixed with the "wicked wheel" compressor wheel. the turbine is the exhaust side, and thats not where your problem lies.

Simply Put. Turbo surge is similar to the Cavitation that occurs with a Boat Prop. The Prop can't bite enough water at certain demands, so momentarily, the prop looses it's bite.

Turbo surge is similar, in that: At certain demands, the compressor wheel can't get, and effectively compress, enough Air.. so it Cavitates momentarily.

There's more to it.... number of vanes, vane structure.. but again, Simply Put.

Yeah that makes sense so as far as the engine goes, does the shutter/flutter pose any kind of danger to the engine, or is it more of an aggravation? It is no doubt causing me some horse power loss too then correct?:dunno

Turbo Surge is more of a PIA aggravation, than anything else. But... If you "Work" yer PSD a lot, The surging >could<, possibly, over time & use, cause some turbo shaft and bushing wear issues. (loading & unloading the shaft & bushing during surge-ifacation)(new word)

But..Ford built a Bunch of these 7.3s, Many, if not Most, are Bone Stock... with PIA Surge issues. Some choose to remedy it, some choose not to ? Some may not even know it's there.
