Returning from weekend of camping pulling 10,000 lb. travel trailer. Midway through trip I was caught in a traffic jam where the next few miles were a steady uphill grade.

Climbed for several minutes - 2,600 rpm + 25 lbs boost (I've made this trip a dozen times with no issue).

Just when I heard the cooling fan kick-in, I backed off the throttle (cooling fan kicked-off) and the cooling temperature raced upward triggering "check engine". Within 30 seconds, all was back to normal (as if nothing happened). Beautiful Michigan Day, 65degF with no headwind.

Should I be concerned ? Should I have stayed on the throttle when I heard the cooling fan kick-in (let it do its job...) ?

Thanks

I would have let it do its own thing. The fan draws a lot of air and will cool down the engine in a few minutes. Drive it normally and you will be fine.

I've been told by a Ford Diesel Mechanic that when it does kick in, it is expected to see about a 15% reduction in hp. But thats normal operation.
