Well, I spoke up too soon. I have been posting some questions about my truck and some possible add-on's. I have been telling everyone that it has over 40,000 miles and has never been to the shop for anything machanical. I guess I spoke too soon, maybe. You tell me.......

I have a bone stock '06 F-350 Dually 4x4 with 4:10 gears. The only thing extra is the 295/70/17 tires.
Tonight while driving home about 55-60 mph I heard a short high pitched clinking noise that definately came from under the truck towards the front. It lasted about 2-3 seconds until I got out of the throttle. It almost sounded like I was dragging a thick metal chain. It was definately that "metal-on-metal" sound. The sound stopped and I cautiously got back on the gas. All was OK...

Then while pulling in my driveway making a hard left turn the sound came back. It just wasn't as fast. It only lasted through the turn. This time it definately sounded like a grinding gear and the front end kinda nudged like when you are in 4 wheel drive and try to make a hard turn on the pavement.

At that point I suspected the 4 wheel drive causing the problem. Again, the sound was way up front not under my seat. I took the truck back out to do a little testing and to see if I could duplicate the problem. I put it in 4x4 high. The light came on but it wouldn't lock in. I tried 4x4 low, same thing, the tranny would go into low but the front wheels would not lock. I tried neutral, reverse, stop and go. Nothing would work. I then got out and manually locked the hubs. Got back in and still nothing. I tried putting it in 4x4 high again and still nothing. I put it in reverse and heard a definate grinding gear-on-gear sound then a "chunk". It went in to 4x4. I drove it about 15 miles on a straight road tring to heat up the transfer case oil. From then on it went in and out of 4x4 high and low with no problems or strange sounds.

Is this a typical problem? This truck has only been in 4x4 maybe 3 times and even then it was a very short distance. A buddy of mine told me that the tranfer case or whatever could sometimes "harden up" and stick. He said I should run it in 4x4 for a few minutes every once in a while to keep this from happening. Is this true?

Second, what about the noises I heard while just driving in 2 wheel high? If the 4x4 gears were seized up, would I hear noises while normal driving? This is what is scaring me. :dunno

Let me know..........

Thanks!!

It is not the transfer case, but rather the axle. Are both of your hubs in the "Free" position? Or the "Auto" Position if you have SOTF.

They have two positions, Lock and Auto. They have always been in the auto position. Tonight was the first time I touched them. They are now back in the Auto position.
