That's kind of cool.

But the difference between the exhaust spinner and the 20MM that used to be on the rear of the B-52H, is that when that gun was spinning/firing, the B-52 would speed up about 5 knots just from the recoil force. No Bull!!:sweet

NO MOOOOOOOOOOOO

It actually happened.

Sad thing about it, is none of the youngsters now flying the BUFF even know it because the last time guns were fired on the rear of a B-52 was over 16 1/2 years ago. All gunners were eliminated and the guns removed from the back of the plane in Oct 1991.

so what you are saying is that if while i am racing, if i shoot at the people behind me i will go 5 knots faster?!

WHY DIDNT I THINK OF THIS BEFORE!!!

i imagine you could turn the plane if the gun had that much push?

If you put a M61 20mm Vulcan cannon on the back while you are racing, how fast you're going will be the least of your worries. That kind of recoil force would likely cause you to take a sub-orbital flight.

I don't think so, on the "H" model, there wasn't enough azimuth movement of the gun to move the tail from side to side.

HI-JACK: ON
But on the "G" model BUFF, the gun turret was much bigger. Any airplane has to be "trimmed out" to maintain level flight. When the gun turret was moved down or right/left it was enough to throw the trim slightly off. In certain circumstances, knowing this, was very "useful".

Say for example, a certain cocky co-pilot would get boastful about how smooth his landings were. He might be "baited" into having a landing smoothness contest with the pilot or any extra pilots that may be on board.:nudge

If by coincidence, just at the right moment when the airplane is trimmed for landing flare, should the gun turret go to a full lower limit, this would throw the trim off during landing. That would cause the plane to either catch the nose gear first, or smack the runway hard enough to be rather embarassing. :innocent:innocent

More than once, a highly confused co-pilot would be buying post mission beverages for the rest of the crew.:haha
HIJACK: OFF
