Got a 1999 f250 7.3l first start it has lots of back pressure sound and is like that till temp gauge goes up to half if u step on gas pedal before it is warmed up has no power and blows black smoke once warmed up runs like a dream

muskcal fill out your signature so we all will know what you drive and what mods you have. This will help us help you. By the way, it is called the "throttle" and not the "gas". Gas has no part in a diesel engine. A little detail.

99.5 ?? Any Mods ?? Air filter clean ?? Fuel filter(s) ??

Sounds like the Exhaust Back Pressure Valve (EBPV) could be/is a bit slow to open.

During a cold start, it closes, to make for a faster warm up by restricting air flow from the turbo. (low power)(smoke)

Could be a corroded connector.. It's below the turbo. unplug it, clean it, plug it back in.. give it a wiggle. try that and see what happens during the next cold start ?

The is the ebpv being close to help warm the oil . You are correct the truck will be down on power until warm because the exhaust is half closed off . Let it warm up this is a Diesel , they don't like being cold .

thanks guys new to diesels the ebpv used to go only till temp gauge hit the first line then would work great now it takes it till half way between the c and h before it will quit closing and thats comming out of a heated garage where it has been all night.

it has a new airfilter, new fuel filter, and a new injector, new uvc gaskets, only had truck 6 months.

My truck has always had to get to the halfway point on the temp gauge . If I am just cruising with no load (this is when air temp is below 50 deg . ) I have owned it since 33k miles , 65k now . My 2000 was about the same . Had it about 100k miles . When it's a little warmer out it opens up earlier .

The PCM commands the EBPV to close when the air temps and oil temps are below a set point. Once they reach that point it will open.

There is a safety measure built in, the EBP sensor (mounted to the front of the passenger side manifold and the sensor is up by the AC pulley)

If that sensor picks up high back pressure it will open the valve, however that sensor and tube clog and cause EBPV issues. Check the sensor and tube to make sure they are clear and working.
