Could it have been the wastegate opening up because the turbo was spooling up too fast? defueling?

what mods have you done to your truck? fill in your sig please so we can know what else has been done.

you are not going to over fueling on a stock truck.. the turbo will not spool up too fast. this is not a gasser. the turbo won;t even kick in unless you are 1800 +/- rpm or higher.

what intake are you using? are you still using the K&N POS? one of the issues on those filters is that they don't SEAL right. if you are using the rectangular filter, then you might be hearing the filter edges flapping because they don;t seat right.

the best $50 you will spend is going to the tymar type filter. just do it. you will be happy.

any chips? tuner?

if you have been wrenching on it, make sure all your clamps and such are on good, and that the air filter is seated right.

Its a plain jane right now, stock paper element back in the air box. the only thing I've done is cut the cat and muffler off.

"A bad exhaust leak noise"? Sounds like your EBPV (exhaust back pressure valve). They make that noise when they are closed but only at a steady throttle pressure. If that noise stops when the truck is warm that is your "noise". You can also remove that too, but that requires taking your turbo off.
