have you checked rear main, oil pan, drain plug, oil filter?

sounds like to me you have ruled out the top half as leaking

Well since the valley was full of oil and it appeared to be running down the bellhousing, gravity kind of rules out the lower end.

Also after looking again and degreasing some more there may be some oil in the area of the HPOP line to the drivers side head right off the HPOP. So still looking. I am not sure why it leaked SO (1-2 qts) much during a 300 mile hwy trip and now it does not seem to leak at all.

The HPOP is constantly changing PSI to the injectors. Think of all the variables that could change the rate of "leak" like heat under hood, pulling a load, even being cold. I would push ALL my chips in the kiddy on this one. Sounds like your quick with the wrench, why not try one of the dye kits like advance or autozone have. Seems there not that expensive and you could see even a small leak. Or do what I did, clean the engine squeaky clean, drive the sh!$ out of it for a mile or two, look for the "starting point" of the oil on the engine. If it's right there under the HPOP, and your sure it's not fuel..BAM baby, your golden nothin else there (save the pump) would leak.

Oh yea, I'm not sure if you've seen one of these trucks with a HPOP leak, but to give you an idea of the quantity of oil that can be expelled, my tailgate looked like spatterware with black oil spots, the entire undercarage has been soaked with oil (great for rust prevention :thumbs ) and I believe the truck was so low on oil, it was about to stop running. Over 5 quarts low... all in about 15 miles!

Hey guys I am very appreciative of all the tips. I have degreased and drove it like norm (like I stole it) and nothing stands out now. It is driving me crazy!! It obviously leaked for somewhre between 300 mile, but now nothing! What gives. I'll keep looking for now!

CPUneck has you looking in the right area....

The HPOP is notorious for just what your talking about...

Clean up the valley real good. Then go out and run it for 15-20 minutes. Then get back in there and see if the oil is back in the valley. If it is the your most likely leaking from either the lines or the backside of the HPOP.

On my truck it was the bolt on the backside of the HPOP. It only leaked when the motor was revved up to 1500rpms or higher. The only way I found my leak was the flashlight trick from the backside and my son in the cab revving the motor.

Man, did you get as nervous as I did leaning over that jinormous fan spinning at (2100rpm for me, AIC :D ) I'm the guy who had the water pump with over a 1/8" of play (still didn't leak a DROP of coolant). It wasn't pretty scarey watchin that fan even at idle on the front of that water pump. Everytime I look at that fan I get those images. Fortunately it only took a couple of peeks cause she was markin her territory  Now at idle nothin, not a drop :dunno

Keep lookin Fire1, you'll figure it out. There's no way I could just chaulk that up to a fluke. Had you recently changed your fuel filter? Or did you open the filter housing for any reason. How about draining the water from your filter? Lots of people have had the valve leak fuel at the rear of the filter bowl and that has been brought up, but I've also heard of fuel leaking between the barb and that small piece of rubber going to the hard line exiting close to the right side front crossmember. Just a couple other things to consider. :cowboy:

Well after other issues today (see other post) I still have some oil turning up in the valley. But I do not see any obvious leaks. I will have to look more closely at the HPOP. I'm not too tall(5'9") so gettin in there is a pain for me. Although being taller would cause other problems too I guess. Anybody have pics of a HPOP off the truck to point out the areas to watch, other than the lines?

This is fun stuff.

I go with CPUNeck on this one, he said "why not try one of the dye kits like advance or autozone have. Seems there not that expensive and you could see even a small leak."

I've never tried one of them, but I used electrical contact cleaner by sprayng down everything in the valley and surrounding componenets. It made it real easy to find a drop of oil. Good Luck! :thumbs

On my truck I did like cpuneck was talking about.....

I got up on my hands and knees over the top of the motor to try and get a good view of the backside of the HPOP. I removed the black cover so I could get a better view.

The way I was able to see mine was kind of an accident. I dropped the flashlight into the valley and it landed just right with the light shooting up at the HPOP. From there I could see that the leak was just oozing out of the bolt I told you about then running sideways to the edge and down. Then it would gather and begin to drip from the bottom of the HPOP.

If you have a helper or and AIC like CPU it will help...

And CPUneck, Yes it made me real nervous ... the first time I got up there and set I told the boy to rev it up so I could watch and he figured that I wanted it "really" revved up so he took it up to about 3000rpm's the first time.... I tell ya. I couldn't get off of that motor fast enough. :roflmao

And for a fan that doesn't lock up all the way until things get warm it sure the hell spins like its locked up. :D

Ok. After multiple degreasings and a case of water in the wrong spot causing other issues, I believe the oil leak is coming from the HPOP. The hose fittimgs are dry. If I run my finger on the bottom of the pump I get a little oil. So, where is the leak and how hard is it to fix? Would rather not take it to the dealer unless I have to. Though it is still technically under warranty. How hard is the HPOP to remove?
