HELP - Need fuel bowl (I think)

Well, started her up this morning and a puddle of fuel started to form underneath. Rolling down over the dust cover by the oil pan. I cleaned out my fuel bowl last week and sludge was there again. I can only suspect the previous pitting I noticed when I had the dirt in the tank finally worked its way through.

Does anyone have a fuel bowl, with or without regulator, that they can sell me? Or, do you know where I can get one for a reasonable price?

Im stuck and cant drive it until I get the bowl replaced. I seriously doubt it is the pump leaking. That is new as of May. I see fuel in the valley under the filter bowl so Im basing my diagnosis on that.

i bet its the pump, or the rubber hoses. before you go through the trouble of replacing the bowl on w him, i would get a definite diagnosis.

I've seen too many threads here and at TDS about fuel leaks recently. Seems to be the latest fad. :eek: I think you need to further investigate your leak before deciding to replace the fuel bowl. Many leaks seem to start at the fuel restriction sensor on the FPR as well as weeping fuel pumps. Since your puddling is under your fuel bowl my suggestion is to go to a local Cat dealership and get a 1 oz bottle of fluorescent diesel dye ($6.00). After cleaning the fuel leak with a rag, pour it into an almost empty tank and run the truck. With a black light you'll see the leak clearly. If your fuel bowl does in fact have a pin hole, many have fixed theirs with JB Weld. Another place to check is the fuel drain. There are two #202 o-rings that seal the drain to the housing and they are prone to leak too. I have extra #202 o-rings in Viton should you need them and can't find them locally. They are available at McMaster-Carr in packs of 25 :eek: and possibly available at a bearing/hydraulic shop locally.

I'll work on it tomorrow if the rain holds off.

This started a stream when I started the truck and quits as soon as I turn it off. if that sheds any light on the subject.

I replaced my filter last week and had some sludge again but not as much as before. It kind of looked like the pitting was getting worse. I plan to drain the bowl tomorrow and take a closer look. I hope it will be more obvious.

I'll post what I find with pics if possible.

Well my fuel bowl was leaking in the bottom, I just clean it very well, spray break cleaner, an put JB weld inside and outside, let cure overnigth and you are done. :sweet

I am now doubting it is the bowl. I drained it and the fuel that sits below the drain hole never leaked out. I looked at the pitting and it does not look to be all the way through yet. At least not enough to allow the leak I have.

The spray on the motor seems to be only on the driver's side. I have degreased it all and will see if I can start it and locate a source.

In the event it is the pump, do we have easy to follow instructions for a do-it-yourself replacment?

The pump is pretty easy to get out. Just take out your fuel bowl and you'll be able to get to it. Two bolts and a few hoses.

You CAN do it without pulling the turbo...the hard part is getting the banjo bolt off the back. Although, if you've ever taken the turbo out before, it's probably easier to take the turbo off and then the pump will be a piece of cake.

The instructions say that after you remove the pump bolts, and before actually removing the pump, advance the engine until the pump lifts off by itself. This ensures the poppet that actuates the pump won't fall into the engine. I didn't do that and didn't run into any trouble, results may vary.
