Hi guys, can you help me by telling me if the front wheel bearing retaining lock is a press or a thread type nut, as my ford workshop manual is missing it.

Thanks Bigdog

The bearing hub is not serviceable. If you have front ABS, you might be able to inject some grease into the bearing hub thru the ABS sensor hole, but that's about it. If it's making noise, about all you can do is replace the entire assembly. There is a company called Dynatrac that makes a kit where you can convert the front end to a cone & cup type bearing setup that you can regrease the bearings and replace only the bearings if need be. But the kit is pretty expensive, about $1,600 US. But if you are like me and don't trust the poorly designed factory bearing setup, it's another option.

I have pics in my Webshots (link below) if you want to see what the Dynatrac is like.

and I have been down this very road... recently.

I went with the factory setup, but I bought Timken brand bearings.

Cheaper than the Dyna Trac; figure I got 90,000 miles on the OE bearing hubs, I could replace a total of three more before it would no longer have been cost-effective, and I really don't plan on having this truck very much longer.. I'm looking for a duallie

oh yeah.. buy a new set of mounting studs (bearing-to-knuckle) or you'll play hell getting them out of the old hub (that's some mean-arse Loc-Tite they use)

Unfortunantly the hub is non serviceable. Stick a fork in it...........its done. Pitch it and go buy a new one and don't forget to buy new orings for it.

I will second this..........I beat the crap out of a good set of wrenchs trying to get mine loose. No luck.

i had no idea. im glad i read this post. that really sux though. is he working on a front 60 or a 50 axle ? or are they both like this. thanks.

Both are the same.

All 99+ Ford Front Axles (dana 50 or dana 6) have UBH aka Unit Bearing Hubs.

They are NOT servicable at all, New ones have to be bought and they ain't cheap :sorry

Thanks Guys, i will just have to get a second mortgage to buy one, Ford Australia charge like a wounded bull. I will have to look into Dynatrac and see the cost of getting it to OZ.
Again Thanks for the Info. Bigdog
