heater core bypass question

I see the recent thread on the heater core bypass issue. What has always bugged me on the ford pickups is the quantity of hot air coming out of the vents when it is on the vent setting, even when it's a nice cool day outside.

I have always assumed this is a hot heater core issue. The diesel site solution only works on MAX AC. Can we make it also work in the VENT setting to enjoy cool air w/o running the AC compressor during milder weather?

I've pondered the same thing.. and I think it could be done with a 12v, switched, by-pass valve.... instead of the Vacuum operated ones.

Turn it on (valve closed) for cooler Vent air.. and A/C ?

Turn it Off (valve open) For normal operation ?

I've 'jus never pursued it ?

I went with the KISS method(Keep it simple stupid).

Completely manual operation. The additional lines above it go to the coolant filter.

Hey Tbar, thanks for the picture. I'm going to look at my truck when I get back home but if you can explain what I'm looking at I'd appreciate it. I see the oil cap, the tranny dipstick, the intercooler return tube, part of the downpipe, some shiny thing, and a cluster of lines which I guess is the KISS but right now I'm just the last "S" in that! I guess you put a manual ball valve or something?

Usually we say "this thread is worthless w/o pictures!!" Hah! Thanks.

Thanks Dennis. That would do what I want to do! I don't think I really understand the diagram (looked at it when you first posted) -- seems an odd way to show functions. But the table on the first page is helpful and shows what gets Vacuum on the different knob settings--great!

For simplicity sake......under the hood find supply hose going to heater core.....Cut.....Place brass ball valve in line to completely shut off the flow of water to the heater core. Works great in the dead of a Texas summer when you will never want anything but cold air. Not as convent as the vacuum operated valve though.

Simplest is the ball valve addition. I already got one just need to get it installed. The one I have can be turned on and off by a cable like a choke cable or somethin.

IIRC, 9 years ago, I installed a 12v valve from Vintage Air (don't know if they are still around)

Anyway, the install took 3 - 4 hours, with a dash mounted toggle switch installed. This allows me to shut off the hot engine coolant from circulating through the heater core, allowing more cooler air flowing out of the air ducts.

In the fall, winter months, I turn the switch the valve off, allowing for heated air.

Works great!!!
