Are you dead set on those calibers? My wife hates the .40, she can't handle the snappiness of the recoil. The recoil on my G21 (.45) is much easier for her to handle, but the frame is WAY too large for her.

Like has been mentioned above, find some that fit her hand well, then take her to the range to make sure she likes the caliber. My wife likes the 9mm and .45 ACP the most out of everything she's shot.

Unless she's REAL familiar with handguns, I still think you need to follow the rule of K.I.S.S. and go with a revolver.

when we were in Jacksonville we went through a police course and got qualified through them for the community policing thing, ( a peice of paper saying we were able to hit targets)
any way the sheriff office there has a requirement for the officers at each yearly renewal to hit i think its 90% head shots on the tragets and in the similator. Mrs PB shot all the targets and got a 90% score using a 40 cal pistol.
the only problem, was she hit all the little heads ( the ones behind a zipper) the police guys thought it was funny and let it count becasue they didnt say which HEAD

Sounds a lot like Alabama fighting rules.

One of those rules allows for a well placed kick in the package, which allows you to mop up the floor with your opponent at your leisure while he is doubled over with pain.
