Gotta tell ya out of the 7 years i have been doing this job, this is the worst i've seen!!! long story short, a 18 wheeler was in the #3 lane (slow) lane on the south bound side and something happened with the driver of this truck that made him cross all 3 lanes taking a 4 runner, and a tundra pick up truck pulling a boat and all 3 crossed the median/cable barrier and into the north bound traffic ..

Hey Shep,

Did you say they hit a cable barrier system in the median? What route was this on in SC? Pm me if you prefer.

Thanks

I don't like anything to do with truck wrecks, spent 36 years driving and I have seen my share of them. My ring says I drove 3.5 million safe miles.
I sure didn't start off that way, because the first time I drove a 18 wheeler by mine self, without a trainer, I hit a Ford Pinto head on and killed the drunk driving it. He was 100% in my lane and the fog was real bad. Be Careful out there, life is precious.

I ran a Traffic Control division for a paving company in SC for 5 years. Mostly on 85 and 26. Saw some bad ones but GOOD GOD! Nothing like that!

When "Big Trucks" are involved.. I'm not sure Any Center divide system is "Big Truck" proof. But..

Here in CENCAL, on SR-198, there was a 10 mile stretch of 4 lane..where there was only 10' of unprotected Median. No cable, guardrail, foliage, nothing.. between the lanes. If there Was even a Minor Fender Bender.. it often ended up Major.. with many, many fatalities, thru the years, when vehicles would cross the median.

About 4 years ago..CalTrans installed a NEW type of.. Heavily reinforced, w/footings, continuous poor, concrete K-rail type of Center Divide that, by design, keeps all the vehicles, on their respective side of the highway, in the event of any contact.

NO fatalities since.

A Money thing, but Something New on the horizon ??

Wow thought an 18 wheeler would stay together better than that. So sad. One of our best friends little boy was killed by a drunk driver here in ks on k-10. No cable barriers. A drunk druggie teenager crossed the median and hit head on with my friends mom and step dad and his little girl and little boy were in it. Little boy died at the scene. Little girl broke her a neck vertabra but shes ok. Both grandparents are ok too. Its so sad to see anyone in an accident but really hurts to see kids. They started a campaign called "cables for Cainen" to get the state to put up freakin barriers. We have soo many crossover accidents on that highway. How many lives does it take to finally do somethin? Bad thing about it is my friend was drivin by the accident just as it happened. His parents bought a van that he didnt recognize yet so he didnt know. Very heartbreaking. Most of these people that start accidents are repeat offenders that should've been stripped of their driving privelages in the first place. They need to be more strict on driving.

Personally I think cable barriers are a bad idea, most I see are implemented at the wrong point of impact to help anyone on either side

18 Wheelers are houses on wheels, they are thin aluminum and insulation attached to a sturdy chassis
I used to see the remnants sitting in a lot all the time ,, if anything was left from chassis up , it was all the personal belongings that you knew would never be claimed

because the occupants were obviously dead :-(

ABSOLUTLY

When we come on to things like this.. the wife covers her eyes 'til I tell her it's okay. When the Kids were young... they'd duck down'n do the same.

For most folks... that stuff stays... for many, it can be worse.

DON'T LOOK.... yul be better off for it.

Once the South Bound lanes was open after the helicopters took off, you would have shocked to see how many people was taking photos out the car window alot of them actually stopped in traffic to snap pics.. It was crazy!!

NO headboard on that trailer..........WOW!!!

Tbar

Shocked as i was i see!!! I have NEVER Seen anything like that before in my life!!

It was on I-85 at the 22mm in Anderson Co..

I think the Headboard is in the pic, of the load, in the woods T.

Yep and the driver was still in there (somewhere).. Took a crain to pick it up off the tree and over onto the road so the fireman can go inside and get the guy out.. We didn't know if he had anyone in the sleeper or not!! Turns out that he was the only one in the truck!!

Seen that before and it's not something you want to ever see again!!

Yea those concrete dividers are better, but ive seen 18 wheelers take big chunks out of them too... This part of the interstate where this crash happened has about 5% of a cable in the median, and the rest is concrete barrier, not sure why just this part was left when this 18 miles on both north and south bound was redone about 12-15 years ago..

Yea i would have thought a "Cab over" type of truck would have done that not that type of truck!!!

Depends, b/c i know for a fact that it has saved alot of lives... I think id rather take my chances with the cable vs no cable and have a head on with whatever is on the other side...
