Frequently, and more and more so lately, my truck grinds hard when going into reverse. It is virtually always right after start up although I rarely use reverse anyway. Today it did it while in a parking lot at my destination while parking. 5 speed manual - any idea what the deal is? It really pisses me off when it does it.

Your clutch could be going bad. Hard shifting especially when you are stopped is a symptom.

Prolly something to do with the clutch. How's your hydraulic fluid level?

I doubt it's the synchros with the low mileage you have. Have you ever changed the tranny fluid? That may help.

Also before going into R, try going into 2nd first to get the tranny internals to stop moving.

ive been meaning to look at the bushing but havent yet. I replaced it about a year ago or less. I'll check but it is only in reverse that this happens. Never changed fluid so guess I should but have no idea how. I sure hope it isnt clutch - no $ to do that right now.

The master fluid level is normal. I know nothing about this stuff. I'll check teh bushing tonight. Antonio - wanna come help with fluid? :D

changeing the fluid is easy.on the bottom of the tranny case you will see the plug.remove the plug,i forget what size wrench/socket.let it drain.replace the plug.on the side of the tranny case you will find another plug about halfway up,i believe it is on the drivers side but i could be wrong.dump synthetic tranny fluid in through the top plu till the leve is even with the bottom of the threads.i find its actully easier to pull the shifter out and pour the fluid in that way till it comes out the top plug hole.

What Rich said about the fluid is correct. The fill plug is on the driver side on my ZF6. I used a suction gun to fill it. Never thought about pulling the shifter, work smarter not harder...good thinking Rich! The suction gun method sucks with one person!

I used Mobil 1 ATF and helped with the notchy shifting. I'd bet part of your probs are the 10 year old fluid. When were you wanting to do the fluid?

anytime really. I might go bow hunting this weekend but do not have firm plans yet. I'll PM you when I know something in a day or two. It has lasted this long, it can go a few more weeks if necessary. I need to put in a SD fuel heater too so maybe we can make a day of work one of these weekends?

Just my .03, but I go with the fluid change too.

FWIW ? I've used RED LINE lubes in all my Trannys & Difs for years. D4 ATF in the tranny, 75/140 full syn. in the Difs. Gits RID OF the notchy shifts and clunks. A bit pricey.. but good stuff.

You can check'm out at www.redlineoil.com
