If the gpr goes bad, the voltage meter after start up should jump right up shouldnt it? or could the gpr be bad and still look as if it is drawing voltage right after start up. The reason i ask is that latley the mornings here in fl are a little cooler and the truck doesnt start as quickly could it be glow plugs. what is the average crank time one should expect. 2-3 seconds? any suggestions would help alot possibly saving me some wrenching.

The voltmeter can still drop with a bad relay. If you've got a multimeter, check the voltage drop across the relay by placing the leads on both large terminals on the GPR. When the ralay is active, the drop should be no more than 0.3V. Cheers!

ok

i dont haave a digital volt meter, but i do have an analog one. and when the key is turned to the "wait to start" light the voltage definatly drops more than
0.3v. it looks like 4-5volts. then when "wait to start" goes off the voltage drops totally out to nothing. how should the relay look on the meter?

Have you ohmed out your plugs yet? You should have no more than 1 ohm per plug. 2 ohms is generally considered a bad plug as well as a plug with 0 ohms.

Also, how old are your batts?

You can get a GPR from NAPA (pn# is GPR 109 ) or you can get one of the heavy duty stancor type relays that are about 3 times as much but last for ever.

I'll go look up some part numbers for you.....

On each valvecover connection (there are two per side for four total), The outer pins on each connector are for the glowplugs. Go from each outer pin to ground. The reading should be from 0.1 to 6 ohms (you'll need a digital meter for this one). Cheers!

terminal position?

i got a new gpr from napa, gpr-109. the terminals are like 90 degrees different from the one thats in there. there are no letters or anything on the relay to say were the wires should go. near as i can tell as long as the big wires are on the big terminals and the little ones on the little ones all is good?
