They were far too precious for me to even attempt to deprive a dealer of their ownership. Same with a CTD, though I almost bought one. I declined because of all the mods it had. I was predisposed to go with a Super Duty because pricing was favorable on a newer, lower mileage model. It's my first diesel and otherwise, I've read lots on expensive bad things that can happen to all of them.

As a sidenote, my wheeling buddy is a diehard Duramax guy as well as a magician wrenching them. When I told him I'd bought the Ford, he gave me a whole ration of crap about it. Then, he had a recovery trip to make, his truck had pump problems, and I loaned him mine. Here's a link to a review he wrote on my truck for a club ragazine after he got back.

I have this particular truck via a fluke. I was frustrated and thinking one wouldn't be in my future for a while yet, when I stopped in my local Ford dealership on a whim. I saw the truck and fell in love with it from 50' away. They had $26.9K on the windshield, I waved a blank bank check in their face and offered them $21K; I got it for $22,998 after adding in taxes, fees, 4 new rear tires installed and a RhinoLiner. KBB/NADA retail in my area is $28.5-$29.5K before taxes.

Outrageous good fortune.

I'm familiar with them. But, back when they were new Ford should have been spelled backwards along the nose....like on an ambulance.

I read the review written by your D-max buddy and was grinning the whole time.:sweet

I too have a 2002 psd and noticed a couple of things in the pictures. First, what is the cover/heat shield on the right side of the engine that apears to span from the battery to the firewall. Mine does not have one, perhaps because it is an automatic. And second, it apears your antifreeze is green. Mine came with the Gold antifreeze and from what I've read many older psd owners have changed to the green to the gold.

Just currious.:confused:

I'm still the same color as the coolant where it comes to my truck. I don't know about that cover but ass-ume it aids in containment/control of underhood heat and assists in evacuating it.

The coolant situation is still a puzzle to me. I believe that I read on dieselmann's page an '02 could come from the factory with either gold or green. I asked the dealer tech who's familiar with the truck and he said he didn't recall, but he never changed it out. Maybe someone else knows and my truck has an 02/02 build date.

I tried calling the previous owner last night but he's out of town. I'll post up what I find out from him when he gets back. The guy was apparently very meticulous where it came to maintenance, I have the complete service history, and he seldom allowed the truck to go beyond 3K miles without service. From that I also ass-ume he would have kept the type of coolant it came delivered to him with.

I'm really anxious to know why he decided to get rid of such a fine vehicle. I was first told he traded it in on a new CTD from my dealer's Mopar sister dealership. I later found out he traded for a new tricked out Chrysler. More guesswork....he just didn't need a heavy duty pickup any more.

Hmmm--that's odd. I thought that the very early-production '02s might or might not have come with the green coolant before they ran out of their in-stock supplies and switched over to gold coolant, but my Nov '01 production '02 came with gold coolant....:confused: :confused: :confused: :confused:

Like I said, I don't know. On a tangent, I really enjoyed the "coolant wars" over yonder. I have no idea which is best but I'm naturally skeptical of dummy-proof systems, and I prefer to know first hand what's going on and make the decisions involved.

So, I personally prefer the green coolant, not necessarily because it's best, but because I'm in control. I consider it to be just another item I need to be routinely aware of in the learning curve to being able to keep my vehicle in good shape. I don't mind routinely checking out my vehicles....in fact, I enjoy it.

I catch a lot of razzing because of this from the younger folks who've grown up relying on technology to free up time in their lives. I concede....I'm just another old fart who even hand washes and waxes his vehicles. Many would be surprised at how many problems I've headed off by discovering them while lovingly fondling every inch of my cars and trucks.

Like the fuel mileage issue about carrying it three decimal points. That's my nature, acquired and supported by my professions....where a couple of thousandths of an inch can mean costing or saving up to a hundred grand or more; or a tenth of one mg/l can determine whether my operations are within legal parameters or not.

Where's the flipoff smilie?:D

Hey Sam, I just noticed you're from Indiana. I lived up there for 3 years during highschool. I lived in Carmel, my mom, stepdad, sister, BIL, and nephew all live in Fishers now. My sister is a brown county sheriff, and my BIL is a park ranger at whatever that state park is in Brown county. I was just up there this last Thanksgiving, place has changed alot.
