glow plug problems

well i let my old 97 f250 sitting for about 4 weeks the batteries died after sitting through 2 freezes so i replaced them. now when i try to start it in the morning just cranks and cranks if i turn it over a couple times on and off it starts up afer about 6 mins or so. does this sound like my glow plugs or something else?

If you're getting a big white fog out the tailpipe, its most likely a glow plug system issue. Measure the voltage drop accross the glowplu relay's large terminals while the relay is active. If you get more than a 0.5V drop (that's what you're measuring), replace the relay. You can get a Sorensen MR99 at AutoZone or a GPR109 at Napa for less than $20 for the cheap relays or get a Stancor 586-902 relay for about $45 if you want one that will last. Cheers!

does it start just as hard after the block heater has had time to warm up? or was it already plugged in when you started it?

no i havent tried the block heater yet but i have nvr needed it

If the truck starts up fine after it is warm, (truck starts easier after it has been warmed up by the block heater or after it's been running) i would say yes it is the glow plugs or the electrical to the plugs. i'm not sure if the plugs are on a fuse or relay.

how does it run once it's been started, is it choppy or smooth?

mine does the same thing. when cold it will turn over for ever kick a couple of times. after the 4th or 5th try it finally starts. lots of white smoke. relay maybe?

It's the relay and/or the plugs. The relay is the less expensive and easier fix, so you might try that first. If you still have problems with starting after that, it will probably be the glow plugs.

My glow plugs are cycling so that would mean I need new plugs right? Ive never put glow plugs on a 7.3 PSD are they under the valve covers? any help is greatly appreciated!
