Peter, if it was from my Grandfather's funeral I would also display his medals/ribbon next to it. JMHO Keith

I would love to do exactly that. sadly, I have no idea where they are and my grandmother died 2 years ago. I plan to ask around the family but suspect they are nowhere to be found. I remember seeing his wings and other items many years ago though so maybe they are still around.

Try Contacting the VA and or a local VFW post and they can track it down using his name, SSN# and or they can put you into contact with an Military Instalations MPF and get you the info needed

I recently received my grandfather's funeral flag from 1958. It only has 48 stars and I was thinking it would be cool to have it displayed somehow and had considered unfolding it to place in some sort of frame or other display with his picture next to it. He was a Lt. Colonel in WWII and commanding officer of a hospital base in the S. Pacific. How big is this flag and would it be wrong to unfold it?

Thanks! I dont want to commit a faux pas!

Peter, IMO it would not be in-appropriet to un-fold and display your Grandfathers Flag. In any way you see fit.

Every year, on Veterans Day, I PROUDLY take my Fathers flag out of it's Shadow box (I made) and display it, along with all the other WWII/Korea/Veitnam Veterans burial flags.. on the "Avenue Of Hero's" at our local cemetery.

I'v found that when I re-fold it.. makeing the folds tight and neat, then relaxing the folds, just a bit toward the end.. 2 stars will be centered in the field when done. His Shadow Box with all of his Ribbons & Medals, is centered (with mine, just to the right and behind).. on a shelf in our living room. As it should be.

You can contact your local Veterans Affairs Rep, with his Service Number and get all the decorations he was awarded. I did the same and about a month or so later, brand new Medals & Ribbons arrived at my door. That was some time back but your VA rep can fill you in on the current policy. The VFW is also a good POC.

would I only be able to get any awards or could I get his insignias too? I would rather have the ones he wore but I suppose that may be impossible anymore so this could be a good alternative.

thanks for all the replies. Just out of curiosity, anyone know the flag dimensions?

Any military organization such as the VFW or Fleet Reserve have magazines that have Adds for just about ANY military related Memorabilia. You might check there.

Don't know if there is a specific "Burial" flag... things change. My Dads (WWII Vet) is 5'X8'.
