They were the Crew Cab Short, Short beds!! Their test had so many flaws it was useless to even attempt the test!! Biggest mistake they made, didn't baseline the 2 trucks!! I Drove out to California from South Georgia last Oct. Way out Tail gate down everything going against getting better fuel mileage, averaged 17.1MPG! Way back tail gate up 16 MPG! 06 Crew Cab Long Bed 4X4

Test

I did not see the test, but any test like that would only be applicable to that vehicles configuration. Vehicle shape, and bed length, and truck speed would all be variables that would change air flow. I will test my truck on the 1200 mile breakin trip, and report what I find.

i am goin off of memory again, and we all know how that worked.. i think it was pretty much an 'in general' finding that any tailgate up/down would have its positive/negative effects - its all in how the air flows over the cab. i would be interested to hear your findings as everyone else im sure.

On my 2005 F-350 6.0 Diesel S/C bed 4x4 I get avg. 17 mpg. I purchased a Bed Cover(soft) it made no difference in mileage. I purchased some Diesel Kleen and that improved my mileage. It paid for it's self.

18.0 mpg. configuration

2006, F350, xlt, 4x4, posi, manual trans, camper special, stock, 2,400 total miles, just the wife and I, 8 ft. bed, carrying a step ladder, full fuel, (38 gal.), 70 mph, 2000 rpm on cruise control, steep grades, Lowest point 720 ft. to highest point 5,200 ft.
On my trip to Las Vegas, we averaged 18.3 for the whole trip. On flat ground with no wind, about 18.8 mpg. Each trip was run mostly at 70 mph and 2000 rpm empty, on cruise control. Our 97 explorer 4.0 sohc engine 4x4 does not get that good of mileage at 70 mph. We get about 16.5 mpg at 70 mph. from the explorer.
