Great thread on steering safety and possible causes.;tu;tu;tu

What is the name of the part that the tie rod(?) or steering stabilizer(?) are mounted to on the front axle shaft, near the front hub. At first glance it appeared that this mount was just bolted on, but closer inspection I found two spot welds on each side. Somehow this piece sheared and broke off so the tie rod/stabilizer is not fully functional.

The piece appears to have been bent and fatigued before breaking...trying to weld is not a long term solution I don't think.

Can this piece be removed from the front axle housing or does the whole front axle housing need to be replaced?:dunno:dunno

I will try to post a picture so we can clarify the part I am asking about.

It's called a "track bar"
it's purpose is to keep the axle more or less centered in the frame geometry
and yes, you need it.
someone good with a stick welder will be able to repair it for you

Just about to leave on a 2000+mile vacation and was hoping this was a quick fix.
