I had an '01 psd and loved every mile of it. Traded her in at 187,000 and never even hiccuped. The reason I traded her in for the '07 was I wanted 4 wheel drive. I hear all the time the 7.3 WAS the best diesel ford made. Can I rely on my 07 to get me 200,000 miles or more? Have they proven themselves since 04?

Give me your .02 please

i think the question is...have they proven themselves since 2003 !
mines a low miler @ 67k (but theyve been completely PROBLEM FREE
miles).

there are plenty of trucks w/ WELL over 150k miles...even the high milers
w/ performance mods are problem free (transmission wise) for the most
part.

keep it stock and you should be fine...keep up w/ the oil changes and
fluids...get an oil sample/analysis and youll be even BETTER OFF...w/
peace of mind to boot !

hell i had a 4x2 '96 f150 (5.0L gasser) that gave me more problems than my
2004 6.0L diesel....the f150 got 2 rearends, 3 cats and countless number of
brake pads.

IMHO the 05-07 were pretty good....some had good luck with the 03 & 04 but I like to wait until a new engine or vechicle has been out for a few years to work the bugs out before I buy one. Good enough for me to trade my 00 with 340k for an 06 with 92k. Now have 97k on the clock and I'm loving the 6.0 and 5R110 in my 06.

In a couple weeks she'll start getting about 10k - 12k miles a month put on it and I don't think it'll be a problem getting 300k or so out of it over the next few years. Maintenance is key.

if you got a unit built AFTER september or october 03 there
were considerably fewer issues.

the 03/04 had the reverse plantary gear issue (accountants
made 'em leave out a 5 cent retaining clip)...but again that
was resolved w/ a customer satisfaction campaign "recall"

03-04 had ebpv & egr valve revisions...again all covered under
tsb/recalls

the 05-07 has only ONE serious issue (hpop connectors -bean counters
strike again) and its now resolved (under warranty) via a tsb.

i STILL say the worst of the "problem" trucks were due
more in part to a lack of TRAINING at the dealer mechanic
level than anything else !

Something else to consider. If you look back 20+ years ALL of these engines have had early issues. What you didn't have 20 years ago was internet that can blow everything out of proportion very quickly.

6.9 IDI had issues with head gaskets & glow plug controllers. Personal computer was just born... The Tandy TRS80:sweet

7.3 IDI has issues with the big "C"... lack of knowledge on consumers part for preventative maintenance, people were just starting to learn more about diesel powered trucks.

7.3 PSD had early issues with HPOP resevoir draining back, UVC harness plugs. Internet was in it's infancy with dial up. A high powered desktop was 166 mhz and with 64 mb ram it was smokin' :lmao

6.0 PSD comes out, internet is running warp speed with forums like this. Humans are a herd type of animal, love a good fight, picks on the new kid and the **** hits the fan.:dizzy

6.4 comes out, high speed net is worldwide, if you ain't got a cool vid on youtube, a myspace page, mebership in 6 diesel forums:chat, a blackberry, a puter with a quad core 3 Ghz processor and 8 Gb of ram and T1 speed internet you are living in the stone age... Remember how long it took to have a video posted all over the place of the truck that was spitting flames out the tailpipe because of a problem with the regen burn in the particulate filter .... IIRC Ford only had a few thousand vehicles sold at that point and only 3 were reported to have had that problem up until then.

Yes there are lemons back there and you will ALWAYS here more about the bad ones than the good ones. It's just human nature , just easier for us to get on a soap box now:rant and I guess it's time to get off mine

Wow... that's a pretty good time line! I would have liked to have seen the 350D that GM came up with included on that list... the only engine that grenaded itself right from the factory in any vehicle it was placed in. And really screwed the name Diesel for years to come...

1978.... GM 350 diesel... Grenaded on sight, made a lot of bad press you had to read about, hear about word of mouth or found out about it when you went to trade in your car and were offered $2k less than a similarly equipped gas model pissing off a lot of people. Only computers then were in government buildings and some schools and filled entire air conditioned 30' x 30' rooms and the printers took up the same space as your average office desk. Data entry was done on a key punch machine that would fill a 1 bay garage...... I got my certification as a key punch operator in 1983 and I can't find work doing that:lmao

I made a lot of money in side jobs as a teen working out of my dads barn doing diesel to gas conversions so guys could get more from their cars when they traded them in.

Ya know, it's kinda scary that 20 years later, Dodge figured out GM's 8-6-4 and made it work for the Hemi... Dodge??
