While at the Ford garage yesterday discussing my tranny problem, the tranny guy and I were at the truck and he discovered that my stock cooler had a small leak at the top and it looks as if it has been that way for awhile. It is caked with dirt and grime and I think that is why my temps are higher than should be.
I made appointment on Friday to have a 6.0 cooler installed on my 7.3. Hopefully that will cool it down. I had the OD light blink at me that one time so I'm still not sure about the condition of tranny but it still shifts good even with my 30K load on it.
My main problem all along has been it getting too warm and I think the dirty cooler may have been the culprit.
The OD light blinking still has me a little worried as the Ford tech said that if the slip code came up that there is a problem and it's just a matter of time.
??????????????????????????????????????????????????? Time will tell but it still shifts same as always and I think I'll wait on the HD Reman tranny.

that's a great find. sounds like you have found a good, honest mechanic.

Might I suggest that you install a spin on filter between your radiator cooler & the new 6.0 cooler to keep any crud out of your brand new cooler. Something like this you can pick up the parts at most truck parts houses since it is just a standard filter base.

The mechanic pointed out that I have a in line filter on the line and it must have been put there when the last tranny job was done. It doesn't look like the one you linked to. It looks more like a fuel filter.????
He will replace the filter when he replaces the cooler.
Thanks,
Bob

If you havent replaced the trans fluid then do it. That needs to be done anytime
the trans gets hot as the fluid breaks down with the heat.

Tranny fluid was changed 7000 miles ago and it has not been hot-hot since the change. Only from New Mexico to Pennsylvania and then to Florida. No big mountains to cross over. I will get it changed if the tech thinks it needs it.

Do you have a aftermarket trans temp gauge that you could tell the
real temp? IF not, I would suggest to replace the fluid as it can get over heated
before any stock devices say it is.

The gauge if aftermarket by Banks and it reads 25 low but now I know to add the 25 to the reading.
Yes, the fluid and the in-line filter was changed. Ford charged $100 for the in-line filter. Stealer not dealer.
You should have seen how caked up the old tranny cooler was. That's definetly why I was running hot.
