Why not try Mercedes? They just set a world record.They ran 3 320CDI's to 100k miles and averaged 139+mph.You also have the Jeep Liberty CRD but I think the best diesel out there is the VW Touareg V10 TDI

Me thinks it has something to do with my budget
The E-320 CDI is "only" $ 34k more than a little VW

I've thought about the VW Beetle TDI. Saw one recently at the Dallas Auto Show, they had a big sign on the hood with 46 MPG. I've never driven one, but plan on doing so one day. The only problem with driving such a small car (my first car was a '72 Pinto) is that you feel like your butt's dragging bottom. But the economy would be wonderful.
